When there is more fuel in one of the cylinder compared to other cylinders in the diesel engine then the exhaust temperature of the engine may increase or decrease depending upon the fuel.
- If the exhaust temperature is high it can cause catastrophic engine failure.
- Therefore the exhaust gas temperature is checked whenever there is more fuel injected into the cylinder.
- It is done by an exhaust gas temperature gauge in conjunction with a thermocouple type pyrometer.
Piston Seizure: Piston is said to be seizure when there is loss of power, there is engine noise and there are fumes observed from the engine breather.
The piston seizure is caused due to
- Exceptionally high combustion temperature
- Malfunction of piston cooling jets
When piston is seized the checks are done for
- Adjustment of fuel injection equipment
- Replacement of damaged cylinder components
- Ensuring piston under crown cooling jets are functioning correctly
