You can try cling film or tin foil. It doesn't work as well as wax/parchment paper though.
Wax paper is made with wax and can melt or even ignite in the oven. Parchment paper is made from paper and is oven safe.

You can use fabric paint or markers but these methods will require a little more effort and care for the design to look good and realistic.
Origami paper is thinner than most other paper, and would fold much more easily than writing paper. Gift tissue might work if it's not too soft.
Most candles are paraffin, I believe. If they are cheap, and feel firm when you press your finger against the wax, it's paraffin.
The next safest surface would be a room with carpeted flooring. That way if you fall it won't hurt as much. Place pillows around you to soften any falls.
