Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters (O3EEs) are containing fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) extracted from fish oil. It is used to reduce the serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, triglyceride optimization, and in the treatment of hypertension.
Uses For
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are used for the treatment of high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia) in adults and to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). It can also be used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, to reduce other coronary risk factors, and to reduce the risk of death from coronary heart disease.
Mechanism of Action
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters interfere with the synthesis and activity of lipoproteins involved in the reverse-transport of cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver. By binding to the membrane of cultured endothelial cells, it modulates and reduces levels of various inflammatory mediators in the blood. In addition, O3EEs inhibit the production of very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), reduce the activity of fatty acid synthesis enzyme and reduce the size of both LDL and VLDL particles.
How Long Does it Take To Work
It usually takes about 4 to 8 weeks to benefit from the effects of Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters. However, some patients may experience a response sooner or later than this.
Absorption
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. After being incorporated into plasma phospholipids, EPA and DHA are found in red blood cells and other tissues.
Route of Elimination
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are mainly eliminated in bile, with the majority of it being converted to ethyl arachidonate and other metabolites that are then excreted in the feces.
Dosage
In hypertriglyceridaemia: it can be taken as a single dose of 4 capsules (4 gm) or 2 capsules (2 gm) twice daily. In previously myocardial infarction patients: It can be taken 1 capsule (1 gm ) daily with food. Patients should be placed on an appropriate lipid lowering diet before receiving Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters and should continue this diet during treatment.
In joint inflammation associated with mild arthritis: The dose is 2.7 gm daily.
In mood disorders & impulse control and age-related macular degeneration: The dose is 1 capsule (1 gm) per day. Or, as directed by the registered physician.
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters should be taken as directed by a qualified health professional. The suggested dosage for adults is 1 to 4 g daily in 2 to 4 divided doses with meals.
Administration
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters should be taken orally with meals or as directed by a qualified health professional. It can be taken with or without food.
Side Effects
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters may cause side effects including gastrointestinal upset, hypotension, bleeding, and altered platelet function.
Toxicity
The toxic effects of Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters are largely unknown. The most common side effect is gastrointestinal upset.
Precaution
Patients with impaired renal function, hypotension, or bleeding disorders should use caution when taking Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters. Patients should not take Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters if they are using other medications that affect platelet function or have any other known allergies or medical problems.
Interaction
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters may interact with other medications, especially those that affect platelet function. Patients should discuss all medications taken with their doctor before taking Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters.
Disease Interaction
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters may be beneficial to patients with coronary heart disease, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia. Patients with decreased renal function, hypotension, or bleeding disorders should use caution when taking Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters.
Drug Interaction
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters may interact with other medications, especially those that affect platelet function. These include aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), warfarin (Coumadin), and other anticoagulants. Patients should discuss all medications taken with their doctor before taking Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters.
Food Interactions
It is recommended to take Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters with food to increase absorption. There are no known food interactions.
Pregnancy Use
Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters should be used with caution during pregnancy. Consult with a doctor before using O3EEs during pregnancy.
