The average of five consecutive even numbers is 8. What is the new average if next two numbers are also included? Correct Answer 10

Given:

The average of five consecutive even numbers is 8.

Formula used:

Average = Sum of all terms/Total number of terms

Calculation:

Five consecutive even numbers are x, (x + 2), (x + 4), (x + 6) and (x + 8).

∴ 8 = (x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6 + x + 8)/5

⇒ 5x = 20

⇒ x = 4

So, the numbers are 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12

Now, next two numbers will be 14 and 16

∴ Average = (4 + 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 + 14 + 16)/7 = 10

So, the new average is 10.
