In the following question, two statements are numbered as A and B. On solving these statements, we get quantities A and B respectively. Solve both quantities and choose the correct option. Quantity A: Pipe E can fill a tank in 2 hours. Due to leakage at the bottom of the tank, it takes 4 hours to fill a tank. In what time the leakage will empty the fully filled tank? Quantity B: 4 hours

Quantity A:

Time taken by leakage to empty the fully filled tank

Normally Tank filled in 1 hour – tank emptied in 1 hour = tank filled in 1 hour due to leakage

Let the time taken by leakage to fill a tank is x hours.

Tank filled by pipe E in 1 hour = ½

Tank emptied due to leakage in 1 hour = 1/x

Tank filled in 1 hour due to leakage = ¼

(1/2) – (1/x) = (1/4)

(1/2) – (1/4) = (1/x)

(2 -1)/4 = (1/x); x = 4 hours

∴ leakage will take 4 hours to emptied a fully filled tank

Quantity B: 4 hours

∴ Quantity A = Quantity B
