In a class of 130 students, a class test for two subjects Physics and Chemistry was conducted. (x + 40) students passed in Physics and (x + 30) students passed in chemistry and no student failed in both subjects. If 60 students passed in both subject, then, what is the number of students passed in only physics?

If 60 students passed in both subject, then, what is the number of students passed in only physics? Correct Answer 40
Given:
Total Students = 130
Students passed in physics = (x + 40)
Students passed in chemistry = (x + 30)
Students passed in both subject = 60
Concept:
Venn Diagram:
Calculation:
Students passed in only physics = (x - 20)
Students passed in only chemistry = (x - 30)
⇒ x – 20 + 60 + x – 30 = 130
⇒ 2x + 10 = 130
⇒ 2x = 120
⇒ x = 60
∴ The number of students passed in only physics = (x – 20) = (60 -20) = 40
