Let the total number of cows is X and the number of hens is Y.

The cow has 1 head and 4 legs.

Hen has 1 head and 2 legs.

 If the number of heads is 48, which means:-

X + Y = 48 ............(I)

the number of legs is 140, which means:-

4X + 2Y = 140, simplify the equation we get:-

2X + Y = 70 ................(II)

On Solving equation (I) and (II) we get:-

X = 22 and Y = 26.

So, the number of hens = 26.

Hence, "option 4" is the correct answer.
