A milk solution of 80 litres contains 60% milk. How many litres of another milk solution containing 85% milk should be added to make a 75% milk solution?

A milk solution of 80 litres contains 60% milk. How many litres of another milk solution containing 85% milk should be added to make a 75% milk solution? Correct Answer 120 litres

Let the required quantity of 85% milk solution be ‘x’ litres

Quantity of milk in 80 litres of 60% milk solution = (60/100) × 80 = 48 litres

Quantity of milk in x litres of 85% milk solution = (85/100) × x = 0.85x litres

Quantity of milk in (80 + x) litres of 75% milk solution = (75/100) × (80 + x) = (60 + 0.75x) litres

⇒ 48 + 0.85x = 60 + 0.75x

⇒ 0.85x - 0.75x = 60 - 48

⇒ 0.1x = 12

⇒ x = 120 litres

∴ The required quantity of another milk solution = 120 litres
