Population of a town = 1000

Percentage of residents speaks Hindi = 40%

Percentage of residents speaks Hindi and local language = 30%

Percentage of residents speaks local language = 30%

Calculation:

Number of residents who speak Hindi only = (40/100) × 1000 = 400

Number of residents who speak Hindi and local language only = (30/100) × 1000 = 300

∴ Number of residents who speak local language only = (1000 – 700) = 300

∴ Number of residents who can speak local language is 600 (i.e. 300 + 300)
