Listening is the process of receiving messages from oral, verbal, and nonverbal communication and interpreting the same. Listening is one of the four core skills of language acquisition. The other three are speaking, reading, and writing. Listening and reading are passive or receptive skills; speaking and writing are productive or active skills. Language learning depends on listening. Listening provides the aural input that serves as the basis for language acquisition and enables learners to interact in spoken communication (Watkins, 2005).
Strategies to develop students' listening skills:
- By providing abundant opportunities for listening in the classroom
- By encouraging or boosting the confidence of students to listen as well as to speak. This will help to connect children’s lives and experiences, and it will make learning spontaneous and natural. Further, once children gained confidence they will be convinced that they would not be scolded for what they were sharing.
- By setting a specific listening task because listening with a purpose will result in better comprehension and retention.
From the above, we can conclude that by giving the students confidence and by setting a specific listening task the teacher can develop students’ listening skills.
