A tanker has a leakage which would empty the completely filled tanker in 10 hours. If the tanker is full and a pipe is opened which admit 4 liters of water per minute in the tanker, then the leakage takes 15 hours to empty the tanker. Find how many liters of water does the tanker hold?
A tanker has a leakage which would empty the completely filled tanker in 10 hours. If the tanker is full and a pipe is opened which admit 4 liters of water per minute in the tanker, then the leakage takes 15 hours to empty the tanker. Find how many liters of water does the tanker hold? Correct Answer 7200 l
Given:
Leakage can empty the tanker in 10 hours
Pipe can admit 4 liters of water per minute
Concept:
If a tap can fill a tank in x hours, then the tank filled by the tap in 1 hour = 1/x of the total tank.
Calculation:
Let the capacity of the tanker be ‘m’ liters
Quantity of water emptied by the leakage in 1 hours = m/10 liters
Quantity of water filled by the pipe in 1 hour = 4 × 60 = 240 liters
According to the question,
⇒ (m/10) – (m/15) = 240
⇒ (3m – 2m)/30 = 240
⇒ m = 240 × 30
⇒ m = 7200 liters
∴ The tanker can hold 7200 liters water.
