A pipe normally takes 4 min to fill a bucket. Due to a hole in the bucket, it takes 6 min. In how much time will the hole empty the full bucket? Correct Answer 12 min

Concept:

Hole in this case do negative work.

Calculation:

LCM of 4 and 6 = 12

Let the total quantity of the bucket is 12 units

Efficiency of the tap = 12 units / 4 min = 3 units per minute

But due to hole tap took 6 min to fill the bucket.

Now, new efficiency of the tap = 12 units/ 6 min = 2 units/min

Tap old efficiency – tap new efficiency = efficiency of the hole

3 – 2 = 1 units/min

Hole can empty the tank in = 12 / 1 = 12 min
