Two Railways A and B depart for Los Angeles at 7:10 PM and 7:55 PM and ran at a pace of 160 kmph and 175 kmph respectively. How far from the Los Angeles will two railways meet? Correct Answer 1400 km

Given:

Train A and B departure time is 7:10 PM and 7:55 PM respectively

Their speed is 160 km/hr and 175 km/hr respectively

Formula used:

Distance = Speed × Time

Calculation

A starts at 7:10 PM and B starts after 45 min i.e 0.75 hours later.

S A = speed of A = 160 Kmph

S B = speed of B = 175 Kmph

A has traveled some extra distance before B started to run i.e the distance traveled in 0.75 hr

Distance traveled by A in initial 0.75 hr = S A × 0.75

⇒  160 × 0.75

⇒ 120 Km

Now at 7:55 PM,

B starts to move while there is already a gap of 120 Km between A and B,

The relative speed of A and B will be, S B – S A = 15 Kmph

A and B will meet after,

⇒ 120/15 = 8 hour

The distance covered by B in 8 hours will be exactly the distance where A and B meet

⇒ Required Distance = 175 × 8 = 1400 Km

∴ A and B will meet 1400 Km far from Los Angeles.

Key Points

Relative speed: It is the algebraic net speed taken into consideration of two moving bodies for a motion in a straight line.

Case 1: When bodies are moving along the same direction

Relative speed = SB - SA

Case 2: When bodies are moving opposite to each other

Relative speed = SA + SB

The question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given is sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of mathematics to choose the best possible answer. Train A departs at 9 : 20 am and train B departs at 10 : 50 am and they travel towards each other. After how much amount of time will the trains meet? I) Train A travels with a speed of 10 kmph and the difference between the speed of two trains is 6 kmph and both the trains are 160 km apart. II) Train B travels at a speed greater than Train A which travels with 10 kmph by 6kmph separated by a distance of 160 km.
