In the following question, a sentence is given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives choose the one which best expresses the sentence in Indirect/Direct Speech. Samuel said to me, "Whom do you hate the most?" Correct Answer Samuel asked me whom I hated the most.
The correct answer is option 2
- When we convert an interrogative sentence from direct to indirect speech, we make the following changes:
- Quotation marks and the interrogation mark are omitted and the sentence ends in a full stop.
- The reporting verb 'said' is in the past tense. When a reporting verb is in the past tense, the verbs in the reported speech undergo a backshift.
- Here 'do hate' which is in the present tense is converted into 'hated' which is in the past tense.
- In reporting questions verbs likes 'asked' and 'inquired' are added.
Eventually, the final sentence will be: "Samuel asked me whom I hated the most."
