Kharavela

  • He was the first great historical monarch of ancient Kalinga who belonged to the soil, and styled himself as Chetaraja-Vamsa Vardhana, and Kalingadhipati.
  • His personality is known from the Hatigumpha Inscription. It says that he possessed many auspicious signs on his body, was gifted with many qualities.
  • Well-versed in Gandharvan music, Kharavela entertained the city with festive gatherings which included singing, dancing and instrumental music.

Harshavardhana

  • Harshavardhana was born in 590 AD to King Prabhakaravardhana of Sthaneshvara 
  • He belonged to the Pushyabhuti also called the Vardhana dynasty.
  • Harshacharita was composed by Banabhatta. He was the Asthana kavi(poet) of Harsha’s court.
  • This literature is the most important source of information of Vardhana Dynasty .
  • The Harshacharita was the first composition of Bana Bhatta and is considered to be the beginning of historical poetic works in the Sanskrit language. There is no evidence of him being a musician.

Rudradaman

  • Rudradāman was a Śaka ruler from the Western Kshatrapas dynasty.
  • The Junagadh rock inscription of Rudradaman, also known as the Girnar Rock inscription of Rudradaman, is a Sanskrit prose inscribed on a rock by the Western Satraps ruler Rudradaman I.
  • No account in inscription has been given regarding music.

Samudragupta

  • Samudragupta (r. 335/350 - 370/380 CE) was the first significant ruler of the Gupta Dynasty.
  • Known as the 'Napoleon of India' for his conquests, he was also a man of many talents and laid a firm foundation for the empire.
  • Samudragupta was as devoted to the arts of peace as to war.
  • He was a great musician and played the vina, an Indian stringed instrument resembling the lyre or lute, with great aplomb.
  • He granted permission to the Sri Lankan king to build a Buddhist monastery and rest house for Sri Lankan pilgrims at Bodhgaya.
