The work done to move a charge on an equipotential surface is Correct Answer Zero
CONCEPT:
- Equipotential surface: An equipotential surface is a surface on which all the points lie at the same potential.
- It can either be a real or an imaginary surface.
- It is normal to the electric field at any particular point.
- When a charged particle is moved in an electric field under a potential difference of ΔV volt then,
Electrostatic potential energy gained by the charge particle (PE) = q ΔV
Where q = charge and ΔV = the potential difference
EXPLANATION:
As we know that the potential at each point on an equipotential surface is the same.
∴ Potential difference is
ΔV = V2 - V1 = V - V = 0
Electrostatic potential energy gained by the charged particle is
PE = q ΔV = q × 0 = 0
∴ Work done = electrostatic potential energy gained = 0. Hence option 4 is correct.
