The coronary artery
The coronary artery Correct Answer carry blood to the heart muscles
Concept:
- In a closed blood circulation system, three types of blood vessels are present: Arteries, Veins & Capillaries.
- Arteries: These carry pure oxygenated blood from the heart to different organs of the body.
- Arteries are made up of 3 layers:
- The intima: It is the innermost layer that is lined by endothelium (a layer of smooth muscle tissue).
- The media: It is the middle layer that provides the strength to handle high blood pressure from the heart. The media is the thickest layer.
- The adventitia: It is the outermost layer that is in direct contact with the surrounding tissue.
Explanation:
- A special coronary system of blood vessels is present in our body exclusively for the circulation of blood to and from the cardiac musculature.
- The coronary arteries supply blood to the muscles of the heart. These carry oxygenated blood to the heart cells so that they can function properly.
- The coronary arteries are of two types - The left coronary artery & the right coronary artery.
- As their name suggests these carry O2 rich blood to the left & right sides of the heart respectively.
- The left coronary artery carries blood to the left atrium & ventricle of the heart.
- The right coronary artery supplies to the right atrium & ventricle, in addition to these it also supplies blood to the SA node (Sino-atrial node) & AV node (atrioventricular node) respectively.
- Any blockage in the passage of these arteries may lead to a heart attack.
