Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : Historical method may be regarded as a science that deals with the nature of human thought and the circumstances which condition its truth or validity. Reason (R) : As a science of knowledge, history is completely separated from natural science because it does not have universal laws. In the context of the above statements, which of the following is correct ? Correct Answer Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
- The above statements refer to the practice of history and historical research and writing. History as the first statement states is the science of studying human thought, events and process in the light of historical sources to arrive at a conclusion. The statement also regards history, as science and compares it with the natural sciences.
- On the other hand, the second statement seems quite at variance, because it focuses on a key difference between the sciences and the study of history since it’s not based on any laws and principles, which allow for forecasting of events or principles as in the field of scientific study. Since the study of history is also not based on dependable data which can be observed or studied through experimentation it is clearly different from the sciences.
- Hence while both A and R are correct R does not follow from A.
