The term Plate tectonics was first used by Tuzo Wilson but the Plate Tectonics theory was first published by W.J Morgan in 1962. It tries to explain the dynamism of the earth's crust and the features of the endogenetic forces. Plate Tectonics theory is based on two principle hypotheses – Arthur Holmes's Convection Current Hypothesis, and the concept of Seafloor Spreading’ of Harry Hess.
Key Points
- A tectonic plate, which is also called a lithospheric plate, is a massive, irregularly-shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere.
- A tectonic plate can be a continental plate or an oceanic plate. It depends on which of the two occupies the larger portion of the plate.
- Young Fold Mountain ridges, oceanic trenches, and transform faults surround the major plates.
- The Earth’s lithosphere is divided into seven major plates which are
- The Antarctica plate
- The North American platen
- The South American plate
- The Pacific plate
- The Indo-Australian-New Zealand plate
- The African plate
- The Eurasian plate.
- Some important minor plates are (1) Cocos plate (2) Nazca plate (3) Arabian plate (4) Philippine plate (5) Fuji plate
- These tectonic plates are not fixed but constantly move horizontally over the Asthenosphere.
- Sometimes these plates collide, move apart, or slide next to each other which leads to Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions.
Important Points
The movement of the tectonic plates creates three types of tectonic boundaries
| Tectonic boundaries | Characteristics |
| Convergent plate Boundaries |
|
| Divergent Plate Boundaries |
|
| Transform Plate Boundaries |
|
Hence, the theory of plate tectonics does not help to explain the origin and location of Ocean Currents and Climatic Zones.
