In a water tank there are two outlets. It takes 20 minutes to empty the tank if both the outlets are opened. If the first outlet is opened, the tank is emptied in 30 minutes. What is the time taken to empty the tank by second outlet?

Given:

Time in which both outlets emptied the tank together = 20 minutes

Time in which 1st outlet emptied the tank alone = 30 minutes

Concept Used:

1/(A's time) + 1/(B's time) + ...... = 1/Total time

Calculation:

Suppose 2ndoutlet can empty the tank alone in X minutes;

So,

1/30 + 1/X = 1/20

⇒ 1/X = 1/60

⇒ X = 60

∴ Time taken to empty the tank by second outlet alone in 60 minutes
