A reservoir can be loaded up to the brim by using two cylinder tubes filling in 10 and 32 minutes respectively. Both tubes are allowed to fill reservoir together for a certain time but being choked, only 5/8 of full amount, liquid runs through the former and only 2/5 through the latter tube. The hindrance, however, being suddenly removed, the reservoir is filled in 6 minutes from that moment. How long was it before the full flow started?

GIVEN :

A reservoir can be loaded up to the brim by using two cylinder tubes filling in 10 and 32 minutes respectively.

CALCULATION :

Let both tubes remain choked for y minutes and hence full flow began after y minutes only.

Part of reservoir filled in y minutes + Part of reservoir filled in 8 minutes = Reservoir filled

⇒ = 1

⇒ + = 1

⇒ + = 1

⇒ 12y/160 = 68/320

⇒ y = 34/12 = 17/6 minutes

∴ Full flow began after 17/6 minutes.
