In the following question, a question is given in Direct speech. Out of the four alternatives, choose the one which best expresses the sentence in Indirect speech. The girl said to her father. " Why have you beaten my sister?" Correct Answer The girl asked her father why he had beaten her sister.
The correct answer is option 3) i.e. The girl asked her father why he had beaten her sister.
Explanation:
- This is an interrogative sentence. So said to of direct speech will be changed into asked.
- This interrogative sentence starts with 'why'. It itself will be used as a conjunction.
- An interrogative sentence, when changed into indirect, becomes an assertive sentence.
- Subject (he) will be put before helping verb in order to make the sentence assertive.
- Past of 'have' is 'had'. So it will be used as a helping verb.
- 'My of direct speech will change into her.
Important Point:
- If an interrogative sentence starts with 'wh-word' such as where, what, when, etc.the same word is used as a conjunction in indirect speech.
- 'My' is possessive of the first person(I).
- The first person of reported speech changes according to the subject of reporting verb.
Mistake Point:
- The interrogative sentence of direct speech changes into an assertive sentence in indirect speech. This is done by interchanging the places of the subject and helping verb.
Eventually, we get the final sentence-" The girl asked her father why he had beaten her sister."
