All oceans and seas have salty water the saltiest of all is the Dead Sea. If a person does not know how to swim, s/he would not drown in this sea they will float in water as if lying down on it. Why do you think this happens?
All oceans and seas have salty water the saltiest of all is the Dead Sea. If a person does not know how to swim, s/he would not drown in this sea they will float in water as if lying down on it. Why do you think this happens? Correct Answer Dead sea has a higher water density
Concept:
Density:
- It is defined as the mass of a body per unit volume.
- We can also say that how much mass it can contain in a specific volume.
- Dense material like iron takes more mass in a given volume than wood.
- Mathematically it gives a formula Density (ρ) = mass (m) / Volume (V)
- SI Unit is kg/m3.
Flotation:
- It can be defined as the tendency of an object to rise to the upper levels of the fluid or to stay on the surface of the fluid.
Sinking:
- The opposite of floatation is sinking and can be defined as the tendency of an object to go to the lower levels of the fluid.
Explanation:
- The flotation and sinking of an object are dependent upon the relative density of each other.
- If the density of the object is more than the density of the liquid, the object will sink.
- On the other side, if the density of an object is less than the liquid, then it will float over it.
- If the density of object and liquid is equal to each other, they are in equilibrium and float and sink both at the same time
- Therefore, the sinking or floating of an object depends on the difference in density of the object and liquid.
-
Density of normal water = 1 g /cm3, Density of saltwater = 1.02 g /cm3
Dead Sea:
- It is a salt lake bordered by Jordan in the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west.
- It is one of the world's saltiest bodies of water.
- This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name.
- The dead sea is as salty as 300 grams of salt in one litre of water.
- Due to the presence of salt in the dead sea its density increases.
- The density of dead sea water is 1.24 g/cm3
- The density of the human body is 1.01g/cm3
- Since the density of the dead sea is greater than the density of the human body, humans float on the dead seawater.
Thus, if a person does not know how to swim, s/he would not drown in the Dead sea, s/he will float in water as if lying down on it. This happens as the density of Dead Sea water is greater than the density of the human body.
