Which ophthalmic diagnostic test measures the Intraocular pressure?
Which ophthalmic diagnostic test measures the Intraocular pressure? Correct Answer Tonometry
Concept:
- Intraocular pressure (IOP) is defined as fluid pressure of the eye, in which pressure is a measure of force per area, IOP is a measurement involving the magnitude of the force exerted by the aqueous humor on the internal surface area of the anterior eye.
- Normal eye pressure is from 12-22 mm Hg, and eye pressure of greater than 22 mm Hg is considered higher than normal.
Tonometry
- Tonometry is an eye test that can detect changes in eye pressure before a person is aware of the eye changes. The most common type of tonometry test is known as the “Goldmann applanation tonometry test.”
- It has been considered as the gold standard for measuring eye pressure. It involves the use of a flat-tipped probe that is gently pressed against the surface of your eye.
Additional Information
- Gonioscopy is also a painless exam in which ophthalmologist uses to check a part of eye called the drainage angle. This area is at the front of your eye between the iris and the cornea. It is where fluid called aqueous humor naturally drains out of your eye.
- Perimetry is the systematic measurement of visual field function of the eye (the total area where objects can be seen in the peripheral vision while the eye is focused on a central point). The two most commonly used types of perimetry is Goldmann kinetic perimetry and threshold static automated perimetry.
