- In the northern hemisphere, they are more variable as they bring warm equatorial waters and winds to the western coast of temperate lands.
- This warming effect creates variable local pressure differences dominated by cyclones and anticyclone in variable climate of temperate zones.
- In the southern hemisphere, there is large open space from 40 degrees S to 60 degrees south so the wind blows at a very greater force.
- In the southern hemisphere, it blows with greater regularities due to it.
- They bring heavy rain, the weather is damp, cloudy, seas are violent and stormy.
- It's also known as roaring forties, furious fifties, shrieking or stormy sixties.
- All the west coast does not receive westerlies throughout the year
- This is caused by the shift of wind belts, and that is because of the inclination that the sun moves from cancer to Capricorn
- In June when the sun is at the tropic of cancer the belt move 5 to 10 degree north and in dec when at Capricorn it moves 5 to 10 degree south.

- They are extremely cold winds as they come from tundra and ice cap regions.
