In the following question a sentence is given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives choose the one which best expresses the sentence in Indirect/Direct Speech. She says, “I will go to school tomorrow.” Correct Answer She says that she will go to school the next day.
The correct answer is She says that she will go to school the next day.
Key Points:-
- We don't make changes in time and tenses of reported speech as reporting verb is in the present tense.
- When the reporting verb is an assertive sentence we follow these steps-
- Reporting verb 'says' remains as it is.
- connector 'that' is used in place of commas.
- Personal pronouns of reported speech 'I' changes into 'She' according to the subject of reporting verb 'she'.
- Time and place references in reported speech undergo changes when we change a sentence from the direct mode to the indirect mode of narration. For eg. 'tomorrow' changes into 'the next day', 'yesterday' changes into 'the previous day', 'here' changes into 'there'..so on and so forth.
By following these steps we get the final sentence - " She says that she will go to school the next day"
