Among the following types of gears, which gears offer a refinement over spur gears? Correct Answer Helical Gears
Spur Gears: Spur gears have teeth parallel to the axis of the shaft and are used to connect two shafts when they are parallel. At the time of engagement of the two gears the contact extends the entire width on a line parallel to the axes of the rotation. This results in the sudden application of the load, high impact stresses and excessive noise at high speeds.
Helical Gears: Helical gears have curved teeth, it is also used to connect the two shafts which are parallel to each other. At the beginning of the engagement, contact occurs only at the point of leading edge of the curved teeth. As the gears rotate the contact extend along a diagonal line across the teeth. Thus, the load application is gradual which results in low impact stresses and reduction in noise.
Therefore by using the helical teeth gear the impact stresses are reduced by converting the instantaneous engagement by converting into gradual engagement.
