In the following question, a sentence is given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives choose the one which best expresses the sentence in Indirect/Direct Speech. Mother said to her son, “Learn to be modest from your childhood.” Correct Answer Mother advised her son to learn to be modest from his childhood.
The correct answer is option 2)
- In imperative sentences, 'said to' is changed to 'ordered, requested, suggested, advised, commanded, forbade, warned, etc.' as per the context of the sentence.
- The conjunction 'to' is used after the reported verb in imperative sentences.
- After 'to', the first form of the verb is used,i.e. V1. So, write 'to learn'.
- The second person is changed as per the object in the reporting part of the direct speech. Here, 'your' will change according to the object of the reporting speech (son), so, write 'his' in indirect speech.
The correct sentence is: Mother advised her son to learn to be modest from his childhood.
