While changing the narration of an exclamatory sentence, we need to follow these steps-
- If the sentence is giving making an exclamation with sorrow (Alas! is an expression of sorrow), we make the following changes-
- The reporting verb said is changed into exclaimed. We add the feeling indicated by the exclamation i.e. sorrow along with the preposition 'with'.
- The conjunction 'that' is used in place of commas and inverted commas.
- The tense changes from the simple past tense to past perfect tense.
