  • 74th Amendment Act:
    • Part IXA in the Constitution, which deals with Municipalities in an article 243 P to 243 ZG, has been introduced under the 74th Amendment Act.
    • The act provides for a five-year term of office for every municipality from the date of its first meeting.
    • The elections to constitute a municipality shall be completed before the expiry of its duration of five years. 
    • However, it can be dissolved before the completion of its term. Hence, Option 2 is NOT correct.
    • If the municipality is dissolved before the expiry of its term, the elections for constituting a new municipality must be completed within 6 months from the date of its dissolution.
    • A municipality constituted after its premature dissolution shall continue only for the remainder of the term.
    • If the remainder of the period is less than 6 months it is not necessary to hold elections for the remaining period but a fresh election for the entire term is mandated.
    • Persons who have attained the age of 21 years are eligible to contest the municipal elections i.e no person shall be disqualified if he is less than 25 years of age and has attained 21 years of age to contest in municipal elections.
