Which of the following statements is/are correct? A) Sound waves are transverse waves. B) Audible sound waves have a frequency range of 20 kHz and above. C) Sound waves required a medium for propagation. D) Non-periodic sound waves are term as noise. Correct Answer C and D
CONCEPT:
Sound:
- It is a form of energy produced by vibration or disturbance that propagates in a medium.
- A sound is a form of energy that produces the sensation of hearing in our ears.

EXPLANATION:
- When a source of sound vibrates, it creates a disturbance in the medium. The particles of the medium vibrate in their mean position to transfer this disturbance.
- So, the particles move forward and backwards about their mean position, creating regions of compression and rarefaction.
- Hence, a sound wave travels in a series of compression and rarefactions.
- Due to the nature of the transfer of sound energy, sound always requires a medium to propagate. So, statements C is correct.
- The waves in which particles oscillate up and down and also the oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of propagation are known as transverse waves.
- The waves in which oscillation of particles occurs in direction of propagation that is parallel to the line of propagation are known as longitudinal waves. sound is an example of longitudinal waves while light is an example of transverse waves. So, statements A is incorrect.
- The audible range of sound for a human is 20Hz to 20000Hz. So, statement B is incorrect.
- Non-periodic sound waves are term as noise. So, statement D is correct.
From above it is clear that statements C and D are correct statements. So, option 4th is correct.
