In alternation of generation in plants, a sporophyte alternates with a gametophyte or vice- versa. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT for a sporophyte? Correct Answer It is always independent and photosynthetic.
Concept
- The life cycle of the plant is called as alternation of a generation because the multicellular sporophyte which is diploid alternates with multicellular gametophyte which is haploid and vice –versa.
- Some plants body are haploid means gametophyte plants (ex. algae) and some are diploid means sporophyte plants (all seed-bearing plants are sporophyte ex. Gymnosperm and angiosperms).
- Gametophyte which is haploid produces gamete through mitosis and these gametes through syngamy produce zygote (sporophyte) and then sporophyte produces spores through meiosis which after differentiation become gametophyte.
- The life cycle of algae is haplontic.
- The life cycle of bryophytes is haplo-diplontic.
- The life cycle of pteridophytes is diplo-haplontic.
- The life cycle of gymnosperms and angiosperms is diplontic.
