The pressure head and kinetic head of water flowing through a pipe of diameter 60 cm are 50 m and 4 m, respectively. Determine the total head of the water at a cross-section which is 6 m above the datum line.

The pressure head and kinetic head of water flowing through a pipe of diameter 60 cm are 50 m and 4 m, respectively. Determine the total head of the water at a cross-section which is 6 m above the datum line. Correct Answer 60 m

Concept:

Bernoulli’s equation is given by:

\(\mathbf{\frac{P}{\rho g}~+~\frac{V^2}{2g}~+~Z~=~Constant}\)

where,

\(\frac{P}{\rho g}\) = Pressure head, \(\frac{V^2}{2g}\) = Kinetic head, Z = Datum head

Calculation:

Given:

Pressure head = 50 m, kinetic head = 4 m

As the cross-section of the pipe is constant, therefore there will no change in heads.

⇒ Datum head = 6 m

∴ Total head = Pressure head + Kinetic head + Datum head

⇒ 50 + 4 + 6 = 60 m

∴ The total head of the water at the given cross-section is 60 m.
