In connection with inspection and testing of concrete structures as per IS 456:2000, while conducting load tests on flexural members, what is the load (L) and minimum duration of load application(T) on the structure? (Use notations as : DL : dead Load, IL : Imposed load)

In connection with inspection and testing of concrete structures as per IS 456:2000, while conducting load tests on flexural members, what is the load (L) and minimum duration of load application(T) on the structure? (Use notations as : DL : dead Load, IL : Imposed load) Correct Answer L = DL + 1.25 × IL ; T = 24 hours

Concepts:

As per IS 456:2000, the following points should be remembered about the load test:

  1. It should be carried out as soon as possible after the expiry of 28 days from the placing of concrete.
  2. The structure should be subjected to a load equal to the full dead load of the structure plus 1.25 times the imposed load for a period of 24 h and then the imposed load shall be removed.
  3. The dead load includes the self-weight of the structural members, the weight of finishes, and walls or partitions If any.
  4. The deflection due to imposed load only shall be recorded.
  5.  If within 24 h of removal of the imposed load, the structure does not recover at least 75 percent of the deflection under superimposed load, the test may be repealed after a lapse of 72 h.
  6. If the recovery is less than 80% then the structure shall be deemed unacceptable.
