9 hrs after a goods train passed a station, another train travelling at a speed of 72 km/hr following that goods train passed through that station. If after passing the station the train overtakes the goods train in 3 hours. What is the speed of the goods train? Correct Answer 18 km/hr
We know that
Speed = Distance/Time
Distance travelled by second goods train in 3 hrs. = 72 × 3 = 216 km.
Total time taken by first goods train = 9 + 3 hrs. = 12 hrs.
∴ The required speed = 216/12 = 18 km/hr.
Smart approach
Time taken by 1st train (Goods train) = 3 hrs
Time taken by 2nd train = 9 + 3 = 12 hrs
Time ratio = 3 : 12 = 1 : 4
As, distance is same, hence speed ratio = 4 : 1
According to question, 4 = 72 km/h
∴ 1 = 72/4 = 18 km/h
