A man travelled a distance of 60 km in 7 hours. He travelled partly on foot @ 6 km/hr and partly on bicycle @ 12 km/hr. What is the distance (in kms) travelled on foot? Correct Answer 24

Let the man travel x km on foot and y km on a bicycle.

Total distance travelled = x + y km = 60 km (given)

⇒ x + y = 60      ----(1)

Duration for which man travelled on foot = x km ÷ 6 km/hr = x/6 hrs

Duration for which man travelled on bicycle = y km ÷ 12 km/hr = y/12 hrs

Total travelling time = x/6 + y/12 hrs = 7 hrs (given)

⇒ (2x + y)/12 = 7

⇒ 2x + y = 84        ----(2)

Subtracting (1) from (2), we get

⇒ x = 24

∴ The man travelled 24 km on foot.
