Neeraj covers 1000 dm at a speed of 1.2 km/min, 0.2 km at a speed of 8 m/s, 500 m at a speed 2000 m/min and remaining 0.2 km at a speed of 8000 dm/min. What is his average speed (in km/min)?

Neeraj covers 1000 dm at a speed of 1.2 km/min, 0.2 km at a speed of 8 m/s, 500 m at a speed 2000 m/min and remaining 0.2 km at a speed of 8000 dm/min. What is his average speed (in km/min)? Correct Answer 1

1 dm = 0.1 m, 1 m = 0.001 km, 1 min = 60 sec, 1 sec = 1/3600 hr

Total distance covered = 1000 dm + 0.2 km + 500 m + 0.2 km

= 100 m + 200 m + 500 m + 200 m = 1000 m = 1 km

Time taken for the first part of the journey = 0.1 km/1.2 km/min = 1/12 min = 5 sec

Time taken for the second part of the journey = 200 m/8 m/s = 25 sec

Time taken for the third part of the journey = 500 m/2000 m/min = 1/4 min = 15 sec

Time taken for the fourth part of the journey = 200 m/800 m/min = 1/4 min = 15 sec

∴ Total time taken = 5 + 25 + 15 + 15 = 60 sec = 1 min

Average speed = total distance covered/total time taken

= 1 km/1 min = 1 km/min
