A train started travelling from station X to station Y at a speed of 80 km/hr., while another train started travelling from station Y to station X at the same time at a speed of 70 km/hr. If the distance between the stations X and Y is 330 km, then at what distance from station X will the two trains meet?
A train started travelling from station X to station Y at a speed of 80 km/hr., while another train started travelling from station Y to station X at the same time at a speed of 70 km/hr. If the distance between the stations X and Y is 330 km, then at what distance from station X will the two trains meet? Correct Answer 176 km
∵ The two trains are moving towards each other, i.e., in opposite directions, hence, their relative speed is the sum of their individual speeds
⇒ Relative speed of trains = 80 + 70 = 150 km/hr.
∵ at the time they meet, they have together covered a distance of 330 km
⇒ Time after which they meet = 330/150 = 2.2 hrs.
Now, the distance between the station X and the meeting point is the distance covered in by the first train in 2.2 hrs.
∴ Distance from station X of the point when they meet = 80 × 2.2 = 176 km
