Each question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statement is sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. What is the present age of Ritu? I. Ritu’s present age is 1/9 of her mother’s present age. II. After 6 years, Ritu’s age will be 1/5 of her mother’s age at that time.
Correct Answer If the data in both statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.
From (i),
Let the mother’s age be x and daughter‘s age be 1/9 x.
From (ii),
After 6 years,
x/9 + 6 = (x + 6)/5
⇒ x/9 + 6 = x/5 + 6/5
⇒ 6 – 6/5 = x/5 – x/9
⇒ 24/5 = 4x/45
∴ x = (24 × 45)/(5 × 4) = 54 years
Mother’ age = 54 years
Ritu’s age = 6 years
Hence, both the statements are required to answer the question.
