Introduction
Cardiac PET is nuclear imaging that shows heart blood flow (perfusion) and sometimes tissue viability. It uses radioactive tracer injection and a PET scanner—not routine blood chemistry.
It may be used when coronary disease is complex, stress tests are unclear, or viability before bypass is questioned. Results fit with symptoms and other cardiac testing.

How the test is done
- Radioactive tracer is injected; rest and/or pharmacologic or exercise stress phases are performed
- PET camera images the heart; total visit may take several hours
- CT attenuation correction is sometimes combined
- You rest quietly after tracer injection so the heart uptake can be imaged without muscle interference.
Preparation and precautions
- Strictly follow caffeine, smoking, and medication hold instructions from the center
- Diabetes and fasting rules may differ from other tests—use their checklist
- Report pregnancy, breastfeeding, asthma, or COPD
- Avoid caffeine and vigorous exercise for 24 hours before the scan when instructed.
Understanding results
Your clinician interprets lab or imaging ranges together with your symptoms. Online “normal values” do not always apply to your case.

- Viability studies estimate living vs scarred tissue
- PET alone does not mandate stenting—decisions combine cath findings and symptoms
