Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an uncommon event in which a tear develops in one of the coronary arteries of the heart. This interrupts blood supply to the heart and can lead to a heart attack or even sudden death. It is most common in women in their 40s and 50s who do not have characteristic risk factors for a heart attack like high cholesterol or diabetes. Symptoms are like those of a heart attack and can include chest pain or tightness that spreads to the jaw, arms, or shoulders. Fatigue, sweating, nausea, and dizziness are other possible associated symptoms.
