Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis: a type of bronchiectasis (permanent dilation of the airways of the lungs) that arises as a result of chronic inflammation and is not due to the genetic condition cystic fibrosis. While cystic fibrosis is a known cause of bronchiectasis, a number of other conditions can also cause the condition. In a patient with bronchiectasis, a search for a cause of the condition should be carried out, and this usually includes tests to rule out cystic fibrosis. Symptoms include a chronic cough and sputum production. Imaging studies show widening of the airways, often with thickening of the airway walls.
