IgA nephropathy (Berger's disease) is a chronic disease of the kidney that is characterized by deposits of the protein immunoglobulin A (IgA) inside the glomeruli (specialized structures that filter the blood) in the kidney. This condition is the most common cause of disease of the glomeruli of the kidney. Its exact cause is unknown, and it is most often diagnosed in people in their late teens to 20s. Hematuria ( blood in the urine) is the most common sign of Berger's disease. It takes many years to progress to end-stage kidney disease with kidney failure.
