G-Gentamicin Ointment uses for

Gentamicin is indicated in the following conditions:

  • Septicemia and neonatal sepsis
  • Meningitis and other CNS infections
  • Serious bacterial infections of Urinary tract, Respiratory tract, Gastrointestinal tract (including peritonitis), Skin, Bone & Soft tissue (including Burns)
  • Biliary tract infections
  • Acute pyelonephritis or prostatitis
  • Endocarditis caused by Strep. viridans or Strep. faecalis
  • Pneumonia in hospital patient
  • Adjunct in listerial meningitis
  • Brucellosis, Cat scratch disease, Cystic fibrosis, Endometritis, Listeriosis, Otitis media , Otitis externa, Peritonitis, Plague
  • Prophylaxis of surgical infections and the treatment of immunocompromised patients and those in intensive care

The daily dose is 2 mg/kg in divided doses every 8 hours. The standard adult dose is 100 ml to be administered over 20 minutes, 8 hourly or as prescribed by the physician. Whenever possible treatment should not exceed 7 days. Higher doses are occasionally indicated for serious infections, especially in the neonates or the compromised hosts. The interval between doses and even the dose itself may be modified if there is impairment of renal function or high pre-dose plasma concentration (pre-dose 'trough' concentration should be less than 2 mg/L).

Child:

  • Up to 2 weeks: 3 mg/kg every 12 hours
  • 2 weeks2 years: 2 mg/kg every 8 hours

The intravenous administration of Gentamicin may be particularly useful for treating patients with bacterial septicemia or those in shock. It may also be the preferred route of administration for some patients with congestive heart failure, hematologic disorders, severe burns or those with reduced muscle mass.

Administration Procedure:

  • Check infusion set and infusion solution prior to use.
  • Pull moderately to tear off the protective cover of the Eurohead of the bottle.
  • Close the roller clamp of the giving set.
  • Remove the cover of plastic lancet.
  • Punch the lancet into the container.
  • Hang the bottle upside down.
  • Open the roller clamp to take out the solution in order to expel air.
  • Close the roller clamp firmly.
  • Remove the protective cover of the needle.
  • Locate the venipuncture site and clean the site with an antiseptic solution.
  • Puncture the vein-needle into the patient’s vein.
  • Securely tape the puncture site.
  • Securely tape the wings and tubing.
  • Start infusion while adjusting flow rate by loosening the roller clamp.
