Sputum fungal smear
Sputum Fungal Smear
A sputum fungal smear is a test done to detect the presence of fungal organisms in a sputum sample collected from a patient. The presence of certain fungi can be indicative of various types infections or medical conditions. This test is performed by a medical laboratory specialist in order to detect fungi present in the sputum.
Preparation
A sputum fungal smear requires a sputum sample collected from a patient. Sputum is the mucoid substance produced and coughed up from the lower airways and lungs. It is most commonly collected for testing after a chest x-ray or other imaging test such as a CT scan.
Procedure
When a sputum sample is collected, it is first prepared for viewing under the microscope. The sample is mixed with a few drops of an inoculating medium, such as potato dextrose agar (PDA), or diluted with saline or a similar solution. The mixture is then spread onto a microscope slide. The slide is then examined under a microscope, and the presence of any fungal organisms identified.
Types of Fungi Detected
While there are many types of fungi, the most commonly detected fungal organisms in sputum samples are Candida albicans, Aspergillus species, Cryptococcus species, Histoplasma species, and other pathogenic organisms.
Why is a Sputum Fungal Smear Performed?
- To detect fungi in respiratory tract samples.
- To diagnose fungal infections such as pneumonia or bronchopulmonary mycosis.
- To detect fungal presence in immunocompromised patients.
- To monitor the course of an infection.
- To confirm the remission of fungal infection.
When is it Performed?
A sputum fungal smear is usually performed when a patient is suspected to have a fungal infection of the respiratory tract. It may also be performed to periodically monitor or check the progress or effectiveness of treatment for a fungal infection.
Risks
The sputum fungal smear is a routine test, and there are usually no risks associated with taking the sample. The specimen collection process may cause minor discomfort, but it is generally a simple and pain-free procedure.
