Schirmer test
What is Balzar Schirmer Test?
Balzar-Schirmer test, also known as the Schirmer Test, is a diagnostic test used to measure the amount of tears produced by the eyes. The test requires quick and easy tears to be collected with a piece of a special filter paper strip, which is placed inside the lower eyelid. Results of this Schirmer Test can then be evaluated to determine if a person has dry eyes.
Preparation
In order to take the Balzar-Schirmer test, patients need to make sure they do not put any kind of contact lenses in their eyes or use any eye drops 24 hours prior to the test. Additionally, patients should make sure their eyes are not affected by any kind of inflammation which may produce results that are not reliable. Furthermore, just before the test, patients should make sure to clean their eyes using plain water or some preservative-free solution.
Procedure
The procedure involves the placing of a special filter paper strip within the lower eyelid for 1-5 minutes. The special strip is saturated with a dye to indicate the amount of tear production in that specific period of time. Results are evaluated after the strip is taken out of the eyelid.
Types
There are two types of tear tests, the Schirmer I and Schirmer II test. The Schirmer I test measures the amount of tears produced after a certain amount of time without any anaesthetic effects. The Schirmer II test is used only when the Schirmer I test results are so abnormally low that the cause of the Dry Eyes Syndrome must be studied more carefully. Although the Schirmer II test just consists of applying local anaesthetic drops in the eye, this test should not be done unless it is necessary.
Risks
Risks associated with the Balzar-Schirmer test are minimal. However, slight irritation or stinging of the eye may occur because of the filter paper strip, and the eyes may also become slightly redder. Moreover, the dye used to saturate the filter paper may cause further irritation or stinging to patients with sensitive eyes.
Why Is the Balzar Schirmer Test Conducted?
The Balzar-Schirmer test is conducted in order to diagnose dry eyes, determine its severity, and determine the underlying cause. It is important to detect dry eyes in order to start proper treatment and avoid possible infection or inflammation of the eyes.
When Is the Balzar Schirmer Test Used?
The Balzar-Schirmer test is usually recommended when a patient is complaining of symptoms indicative of dry eyes, such as burning sensation and irritation. Some doctors may order a Schirmer test checkup at least once a year, especially for those who wear contact lenses.
