What is an Ovulation Home Test?
An ovulation home test is a home test you can do to predict ovulation—the time when your body is ready to be fertilized by a man’s sperm. It is a simple, non-invasive method of detecting your most fertile time of the month. This can increase your chances of conceiving.
Why Should I Perform an Ovulation Home Test?
If you are trying to get pregnant, ovulation home tests are very useful in predicting when you are most fertile. By increasing the chances of being in the right place at the right time, you can increase your chances of conceiving. Ovulation home tests are also helpful for couples who do not use birth control, but do not want to conceive, as it can help them plan for sexual activity outside of the most fertile window.
When Should I Perform an Ovulation Home Test?
Most ovulation home tests recommend testing around 14 days after the start of your last menstrual period. This is typically around Day 14 of a 28-day cycle. This day may vary for women with shorter or longer cycles.
Types of Ovulation Home Tests
- Urine Tests: This type of ovulation test uses an ovulation predictor kit, or OPK, to detect ovulation. An OPK contains an antibody strip that reacts to levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. LH is a hormone that increases drastically at the time of ovulation. Each OPK typically includes several test strips that you can use throughout the month.
- Saliva Tests: This type of ovulation test uses a microscope to detect changes in saliva patterns. The microscope detects an increase in salt content in saliva due to increased estrogen levels. This salt buildup forms a pattern called the “ferning pattern” that is visible through the microscope.
Preparation for an Ovulation Home Test
To get the most accurate results, it is important to follow the instructions for each ovulation test. This includes avoiding all forms of birth control and medications that could affect the results. Additionally, you should follow the correct timing for each test—that is, 14 days after the start of your last menstrual period.
Procedure for an Ovulation Home Test
- Urine Tests: To complete a urine test, you will collect a sample of your first morning urine and use the test strip according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Most OPKs come with a colour chart so you can read the results. If the strip changes colour or you see a “positive” sign on the test, this means you're ovulating and should have intercourse soon for the best chance of conceiving.
- Saliva Tests: To complete a saliva test, you will collect a sample of your saliva on the microscope slide. Then you will view the sample through the microscope in the correct magnification. If you see the ferning pattern, this indicates ovulation and you should have intercourse soon for the best chance of conceiving.
Risks of an Ovulation Home Test
Ovulation home tests are generally safe and reliable. However, if they are not used properly, or if your body is not working correctly, they may not be as accurate. Additionally, some women may experience slight discomfort while collecting a sample for the test. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, and to talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.
