What Is a Nuchal Translucency Test?

A Nuchal Translucency Test, also known as a Nuchal Scan, is a type of prenatal screening test used to evaluate a baby's risk of certain chromosomal disorders. It is typically done between 11–13 weeks of gestation and is done in conjunction with a blood test. The test measure the translucent space at the back of the baby’s neck, which can be an indicator of certain genetic disorders.

Types of Nuchal Translucency Tests

The two types of Nuchal Translucency tests are:

• Qualitative Nuchal Translucency (QNT) Test – Used to measure the translucent space of the neck for chromosomal abnormalities.
• Quantitative Nuchal Translucency (QNT) Test – Used to also measure the translucent space of the neck, but with additional blood tests to measure blood concentrations of particular markers. The QNT test is more accurate than the QNT test.

When Is the Nuchal Translucency Test Done?

The Nuchal Translucency test is typically done between 11-13 weeks of the pregnancy. Other pregnancy screenings such as the triple screen test (11–14 weeks) and the quadruple screen test (15–20 weeks) may be done in conjunction with the Nuchal Translucency test to provide accurate results.

What to Expect

The Nuchal Translucency test is a quick and painless procedure that takes approximately 20 minutes. During the test, the sonographer will use ultrasound imaging to measure the width of the nuchal translucency space in your baby’s neck. They will also measure other aspects of your baby’s body for comparison.

Risks

The Nuchal Translucency test is considered a low-risk test. There is no risk to mother or baby and does not cause any pain or discomfort. While the test is not 100% accurate, it can provide useful information when used in conjunction with other tests.

Preparation

Before the test, make sure to drink plenty of water. This helps the sonographer get a clear picture of the baby. It is also important to be patient throughout the procedure as it can take a few minutes longer than expected. Wear comfortable clothing and plan to arrive a few minutes early.
