Liver Scan

A Liver scan is an imaging procedure used to examine the structure of the liver and the functions that it performs. It helps to diagnose diseases or conditions that affect the liver or its functioning. Some common diseases that can be diagnosed with a liver scan are cirrhosis, tumors, inflammation, or blockage of the bile ducts.

Types of Liver Scans

• Ultrasound Scan – This is a painless imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain images of the liver.
• CT Scan – This procedure uses X-rays to create images of the internal parts of the body including the liver.
• MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Scan – This procedure uses magnets and radio waves to create images of the liver.
• Liver Function Test – This test measures the level of enzymes in the blood, which can indicate a problem in the liver.

Preparation for a Liver Scan

Before a liver scan, your doctor may ask you to have a few tests such as blood tests, urine tests, and imaging tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan or MRI. You may need to fast for 8-12 hours prior to the scan. You may also need to drink a special contrast material that will make the scan easier to read. Your doctor will explain what you need to do in advance.

Procedure of a Liver Scan

During the liver scan, you will be asked to lie on a table. A special injection of radioactive tracer will be given to you either through a vein in your arm or through an IV. The tracer will help the scan highlight abnormalities in your liver. During the scan, you may hear clicking or buzzing sounds coming from the machine.

Risks of a Liver Scan

A liver scan is generally safe and poses little to no risk to most people. However, since it involves exposure to radiation, it can increase the risk of certain cancers. The risk of this is very low, however, and is outweighed by the benefits of the test.

Why Does a Liver Scan Need to be Performed?

A liver scan is used to diagnose diseases or conditions that affect the liver or its functioning.
