LH response to GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) blood test is a lab test that measures the body's response to the hormone GnRH in order to determine the release of luteinizing hormone (LH). This test is usually used to diagnose infertility, menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other hormone-related conditions in both men and women.

Preparation

This is a simple test, for which no prior special preparation or fasting is necessary. However, it is best to consult a doctor before the test to discuss when the test should be done and also to discuss any medications or supplements that the patient might be taking which could have an effect on the results.

Procedure

The procedure of the test is simple. A GnRH blood sample will be taken from a vein in the arm. The sample will be sent to a lab for analysis and the results will be available within a few days.

Types of LH Response Test

There are two types of LH response test:

• Single Dose Test (SDT) – This test involves taking a single dose of GnRH. The blood sample is then taken at intervals in order to measure the patient’s LH response.
• Double Dose Test (DDT) – This test involves taking a double dose of GnRH. The blood sample is taken at intervals in order to measure the patient’s LH response.

Risks

The LH response test is a simple and safe procedure which does not involve any serious risks. The only side effects that may occur are temporary discomfort at the site of the injection, slight bruising and/or swelling at the site of the injection, and some mild headache.
